Popcorn Prophets joins Film Independent’s Fiscal Sponsorship Program (FiSpo)

EDINBURG, Texas [August 5, 2025] -The upcoming feature film Popcorn Prophets has officially been accepted into Film Independent’s Fiscal Sponsorship Program, giving the project access to nonprofit status and allowing all donations to be tax-deductible.

Written and produced by Reynaldo Leal, Popcorn Prophets is a coming-of-age drama set in 1990s South Texas. It tells the story of a quiet teenager who carries the weight of his family’s struggles and finds escape and healing at the local movie theater.

"Being accepted by Film Independent is a huge step for us," said Leal. "This program gives our project both credibility and a pathway for others to support it in a meaningful way."

Through the fiscal sponsorship program, Popcorn Prophets is now eligible to receive foundation grants, individual contributions, and corporate sponsorships that require 501(c)(3) nonprofit status. Film Independent also provides donation processing, donor tax acknowledgments, and access to industry support, allowing the filmmakers to focus on the creative work while building a trusted fundraising platform.

The Fiscal Sponsorship Program supports independent films with cultural, artistic, or social value. Past participants include award-winning features, short films, and documentaries from across the country.

Popcorn Prophets is currently in development and will be shot on location in the Rio Grande Valley in 2026. Casting is underway.
